"Decade of Failure – Focus Serbia

Saturday, November 05th, at 5PM, 2011.
ITS-Z1 (International Test Site-Z1), Ritopek
“Decade of Failure – Focus Serbia”
Performance and publication of Zampa di Leone

Free bus transportation for all who are interested leaves at 4PM from the plateau of the Church of St. Marko. Return is planned for 8PM. Apply by email: zampadileone@gmail.com

Zampa di Leone celebrates its decade of actions directed against the neoliberal schizophrenia, and the same kind of activism in culture. It is possible to sum up the principle of this event in one sentence: Zampa’s decade-long contribution to the failed project of contemporary Serbian art is huge!

Everything will be presented with a performance and yet unseen collection of Zampa’s works entitled “DECADE OF FAILURE – Focus Serbia”. The audience will have an opportunity to recall the adventures of Daddy’s Boy, Tycooness, Gera, Brdjan, Dr. Agan, Fried Gymnasts and all other sorts of heroes and heroines, protagonists of the failed project of contemporary Serbian art.

This evening will be an ideal opportunity for all working men and women, Belgrade and world audience, activists, radical artists and critically inclined interested parties to receive the publications of Zampa di Leone during an hours-long performance conceived for the space now widely known as the ITS-Z1 (International Test Site-Z1) in Ritopek, which was initiated by New York artist Dragan Ilic.

The collective Zampa di Leone has been focused for a decade now on deconstructing the market artistic production and its wavering role in the twilight of neoliberal capitalist culture. From mapping the local Balkan and European art scene, to uncovering the controversial process of gentrification, Zampa di Leone plunges its claws deep, revealing corruption and problematic processes of contemporary culture.

Neoliberalism is coming apart at the seams, which is reason for Zampa to smile with satisfaction! And just as Zampa di Leone announced last year, we are all witnesses to huge chaos of already broken down neoliberalism, to whose breakdown Zampa itself contributed as well, by fighting for over ten years now. And while the heroes and heroines of the DECADE OF FAILURE believed in Marlboro, Coca-Cola’s Santa Claus label and Suzuki, and imagined they would be saved by the invisible hand of regulation of the Serbian art market, now they are merely disappointed candidates for the failed EU project where Angela Merkel is pressing them to pay the interest to Deutsche Bank.

A number of critical actions, interruptions and sabotages of exhibition openings at large art events (like the Istanbul Biennial for example) and museums were carried out by the collective Zampa di Leone.
First big exhibition of this anonymous collective in Serbia was organized by curator and artist Selman Trtovac in July 2008 at the Gallery of the University Library Svetozar Markovic in Belgrade. In the same year, a Zampa exhibition was organized in the SKUC Gallery in Ljubljana, the Open Space Gallery in Vienna and many other places. In 2009 in Hamburg, there were exhibitions at Falkenberg Sammlung and Hamburger Kunsverein. In 2010, an exhibition was opened in Chisinau entitled “Zampa di Moldavione”, which agitated for the development of the Zampa movement in the countries of former Soviet republics.
Zampa di Leone is also the initiator of the platform Art Leaks, which uncovers corruption and improper behavior in the field of cultural production.

During this summer, Zampa’s works were exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia in Tallinn.
International art magazine Umelec published some of the most important Zampa’s works in a special review: http://www.divus.cz/umelec/article_page.php?item=1544

""STELARC"

CIRCULATING FLESH:
THE CADAVER, THE COMATOSE
& THE CHIMERA

This is a time of body hacking, gene mapping, neural jacking and prosthetic augmentation. Bodies become problematic in how they interact in the world. Flesh is circulating. Organs are exchanged. Limbs amputated from cadavers are stitched and reanimated on living bodies. Skin cells can be re-coded into sperm cells. Cadavers can be preserved forever with plastination whilst simultaneously comatose bodies can be sustained indefinitely on life-support systems. Dead bodies need not decompose and near dead bodies need not die. And chimeras are constructed in-vitro meshing human, animal and plant genes. As well as a time of Circulating Flesh, it’s also a time of Fractal Flesh and Phantom flesh.

The artist will discuss the conceptual and ethical issues involved in augmenting, enhancing and altering the human body through the use of technology, bioengineering. He will also demonstrate his Prosthetic Head project and show the Ear On Arm.

"MY SECOND SUNS"

Dragan ilic

Medium: Three reflective mirrors (2x2, 4x2, 2x2 m.)
Test tube (12x180 cm)
Content tubes: artist’s sperm (100gr.), artist’s blood (5gr.), soap (1.5l), water (6l)

The distance between two reference points shared by the river is 3 km.
Operating time: from 16:30h to 17:15h (central level begins to reflect the sun's rays at 16:30 and then left area at 16:45 and right area at 17:15).
These reflections are focused on the content of tubes that are positioned on the roof of the complex of ITS-Z1.
The intention of Dragan Ilic is artificially to speed up the process of DNA mutations that will be manifested through the transparent chemical events. This experiment is scheduled for 2th of July when with presence of chemists will begin artificial, systematic process that would function as a site-specific outdoor work.
Element of surprise and prediction also is crucial.
The artist came to these ideas through a many years of interest in natural phenomena (earthquakes, solar radiation, atmospheric events, inter planetary processes) and the need to try to overcome the fear of the unknown through the creation of personal mechanisms and experiments in order to find ways:
1. to speed up - or bridle the natural processes
2. to adapt to future natural changes, because
"Nature is aggressive and we can not believe her - you need to be ready for her surprises."
Through the title of "My second sun" Ilic constructs a world for himself by introducing "Artificial sun" and in that way creating his own “solar system”.
Dragan Ilic was developing this project since 1969. when he began to collect his sperm, till 1982. Then came to the idea to encase it into tubes and exposed to external influences, and views of visitors of the Documenta 7 in Kassel, under the auspices of Fashion Mode. After that in 1988 in Williamsburg he exhibited this substance to cathode rays and laser light that resulted with the formation of groups of cell colonies and their orientation towards the radiation source.
Completion of this project and certainly it’s expansion in terms of introducing and mixing different substances, such as semen, blood and soap, with all documentation and samples will be exposed to visitors at second of July 2011.
On that occasion the two artists (Dragan Ilic and Stelarc) each in their own field of work will be carried out the extension of human impact on natural determination.

Inner symmetry/light-sound installation

All the fundamental theories of Physics nowadays contain certain symmetries. The basic principles of symmetry govern the basics of the Physics Laws and define primary Laws in nature.
ITS has three, formally almost symmetrical rooms. Yet, it is not the absolute symmetry therefore my intention is to activate the viewer by importing the special geometrical drawing and sound to participate in harmony. The basic for feeling the symmetry is the synergy between the inner self of the viewer and the spatial geometry rhythms within the space that he/she physically steps into. With the title ‘inner symmetry’, I wanted to give a clue and point out how to perceive the space.
Harmonic sound that fills the ITS space would be the engine of the non-formal symmetry and the initiator for of the inner space and the space that the viewer walks through. The gallery space contains geometrical drawings that trace the path for the viewer who is sensitive to space for him/her to reach the potential symmetry. That makes the viewer to become an active participant of the spatial installation for he/she has the chance to enter the inner structure, walk into the drawing field and, for I shape the void of the space and not concrete material form, to form the exceptional picture of the space with his/her mind/emotions that is unique and personal for every single viewer. This approach opens the room for reflection and consonance between the inner space of the viewer and the real gallery space.
